The hardest and yet most fun I had while creating this novel was the character creation. I already knew without a doubt how I wanted all my characters to look. Names came later. But the faces- the designs- that was in my head from day one.
One of my favorite characters in the book has to be my MMC (Thalion AshFyre) and Side MMC (Garrick Ironvale). Their life long friendship and background story really made these characters come to life for me. When I speak of them, or any of my characters, I speak as if these are real walking people. I sometimes forget myself that they are fictional. But that’s the thing about characters in a novel you’re creating. They are real. As real to me and another people is.
The hardest part about the creation of my characters for me was keeping them consistent throughout the story. Just like real people, it’s very easy to lose yourself along the way. So I struggled at first with the consistency. I knew them well. Knew their backstories but I caught myself going,” hmmm that doesn’t feel like Garrick.” Or,”no Thalion would never say that.”
And that in itself is how easy it was to get off track but also back onto it as well. The help of my friends as beta readers really did the test.
My main characters name, my FMC, is Willow Shadesburrow. She’s confident and headstrong and fearless. But that fearlessness gets her into trouble now and again. She’s loving and loyal but also stubborn and straightforward. She’s like a beautiful arrow. Strong and sees straight through you.
The hardest part of my character journey I’ll say was getting the art to match the ideas in my head. That took weeks. Try and fail became the name of that game but it all eventually came worked out.
Every character in my book has some kind of backstory. Even the side characters or the add ins to help fill the story on the way. Each and every one of them matters just as much as the next.
My characters are real people and I hope as you follow this journey with me on my upcoming novel Blood & Roses. You’ll see them as real too.
